Jack Widowsky, member of the 393rd Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group and one of the few remaining members of the atomic missions over Japan, passed away on March 22, 2018. Joining the USAAF on October 22, 1942, he attended navigator school and upon completion was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 393rd Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group which was under the command of Colonel Paul Tibbets, who later piloted the Enola Gay to Hiroshima. After training at Wendover Air Base, Utah, he, along with the rest of the servicemen assigned to the 509th transferred to Tinian, an island which is part of the Marianas in the Northern Pacific. On August 6, 1945, while acting as navigator on the B-29 Big Stink, they flew to Iwo Jima and remained there as back up plane to the Enola Gay during its mission to Hiroshima. On August 9, 1945, flying the B-29 Laggin Dragon, they were assigned as the advance weather plane for Nagasaki. Although Nagasaki was not the initial target, conditions over Kokura (primary) made it the second choice. After leaving the service in 1946, Widowsky went back with his wife to his native New Jersey where for many years he was a salesman for confectionary and children's toys. A member of the Greatest Generation, we thank him for his service to our country and helping to bring World War Two to a victorious conclusion.
